History: Danganronpa wiki

Personality:

Kaede Akamatsu is the perfect Danganronpa protagonist. She's outgoing and has an interminable spirit, an unshakable optimism, and the will to never give up. Once she has a goal, whether it's ending the killing game or killing the mastermind, she moves forward with all her determination. She wants the best for herself and for her friends, and is willing to do anything to achieve this... even when "doing her best" can be self-destructive or run counter to her actual goals. It's thanks to this that she ends up being the first culprit of the murder game and the first person executed by Monokuma.

She has the utmost faith in her friends, even when it's to her detriment. She befriends one of her classmates, the Super High School Level Detective Shuichi Saihara; when he deduces that there must be a mastermind, and that catching them would end the killing game, she goes ahead and creates an elaborate plan to kill the mastermind. She's too independent to consider going to anyone else for help with this; she also didn't want her friends to know she was a murderer, should she succeed in killing the mastermind. Instead of killing the mastermind, though, her plan leads to the death of one of her fellow classmates and friends, Rantaro Amami. Rather than give up, admit her crime, and take advantage of the "First Blood Perk" granted by Monokuma to escape the killing game with no consequences (for being the first culprit), she charges forward in an attempt to catch the mastermind through the class trial. She goes into the trial knowing that if they can't unmask the mastermind, she'll be forfeiting her own life. This is illustrated when the evidence starts to point toward her friend Shuichi; she knows he wasn't the culprit, and she believes there's no way he could be the mastermind, so she encourages him to deduce the true culprit of the case -- her -- which leads to her execution. She tells her classmates she's prepared herself for her death, that she did what she had to do to try to catch the mastermind, and entrusts her wish that everyone escape the killing game and be friends with each other to Shuichi.

While she was alive,
even in the atmosphere of the killing game, she never lost sight of her goal to escape and become friends with all of her classmates. When they discover the (obvious trap of an) exit planted by Monokuma, she leads all of them down it multiple times, even when it becomes clear they won't be able to succeed. She's a charismatic leader and was able to inspire people to follow her until they realized it was hopeless. Even if everyone else realized it, she was ready to keep trying until they succeeded; it was only through the intervention of her classmates that she finally walked away from it.

This optimism expresses itself in her conversations with her classmates as well. She keeps telling them that they're going to escape, that they'll all become friends with each other. She seems to genuinely care about each and every one of them, even if they get on her nerves or, in the case of one classmate, are so loud that she thinks about gluing her mouth shut.

She's impulsive and lacks a sense of normal personal space; from something as extreme as being willing to plot and follow through with a murder to something as relatively benign as pushing a button on the back of her robotic classmate's neck, when she has an idea, she doesn't think critically about the consequences. She sees a path forward, and she pursues it. While pushing the button on the back of Keebo's neck is one instance of her lack of personal space, a somewhat more extreme example of this is when she's trying to get classmate Tsumugi Shirogane's attention to speak with her. First she pokes Tsumugi's cheek with her finger, then grabs Shuichi's hand and forces him to poke her cheek as well. Later, Kaede starts by grabbing the hem of Tsumugi's skirt and starting to pull it up, warning cheerfully that she's going to tug it up over her head so Shuichi can see her underwear. She takes Shuichi's hand without hesitation when she's nervous. That said, she has a very clear sense of her own boundaries, and what she considers acceptable with her own body. When classmate Kaito Momota asks her to give him a hug, she flat-out refuses, and when Miu Iruma gropes her chest, she knocks her away, but when she's on a ladder and realizes Shuichi can see her panties, she just shrugs and tells herself, "well, he can't unsee them."

The faith she has in her friends can also be a deteriment, even outside the rather extreme example of accepting Shuichi's theory about the mastermind and concocting a plot to kill them. She believes things people tell her and doesn't always use her best critical thinking; when classmate Kokichi Oma lies to her face several times, she continues to accept his words at face value; even when she thinks to herself that whatever absurd story he's telling her "must be a lie," she continues to give him a chance. This can make her seem gullible at best, and dumb at worst.

Kaede loves the piano. While her talent is that of the "Super High School Level Pianist," even before she earned that title, she describes herself as being a "piano freak" since she was a child. She'll compare situations to classical music, such as telling Shuichi at one point that if there were a piano where they were, she'd play Claude Debussy's "Clair de Lune" to help them, because it's so soothing and calming. She often makes references to classical music when she speaks. Even when she spends time with her friends, she'll start thinking about playing the piano; even she can grow frustrated with herself for this single-mindedness, reprimanding herself for being a piano freak and thinking about the piano instead of concentrating on her time with Shuichi. Even her execution featured her being hanged from the neck above a piano.

In short, she's an incredibly strong-willed and energetic young woman who wants the best for her friends, and is willing to do anything to achieve what she sees as the best ending for them all.

Abilities and Nerfs:
  • Super High School Level Pianist: Kaede's incredibly talented at playing the piano, composing musical scores, and has a near-encyclopedic knowledge of classical music. She can play music by ear after hearing it, as well as sight-read unfamiliar sheet music. She also has a keen ear for music and differenciating sounds and voices in a crowded room.

    Inventory:
  • White backpack with a notebook, spare vest, and pencil case with pens and pencils inside. Her Monopad (basically an iPad with canon features such as classmate profiles, a map of the school they were trapped in, etc.) It doesn't seem to require charging.
